Every day first responders rely on radio systems to communicate in emergency situations. Their radios are one of the most important tools they have. The lack of proper radio coverage can pose a threat to first responders as well as the people they are protecting.
Legislatures have recognized this problem and have recently implemented an array of national and local codes to address this issue.
*NFPA
NFPA 1 Section 11.10 dictates in all new and existing buildings, minimum radio signal strength for fire department communication shall be maintained at a level determined by the AHJ. Where required by the AHJ, two-way radio communication enhancement systems shall comply with NFPA 1221.
*IFC
Section 510 in 2018, 2015, 2012, 2009 editions dictate that all new and existing buildings shall have approved radio coverage for emergency responders.
*IBC
IBC Section 916 (2015 edition) and IBC Section 915 (2012 edition) dictate that radio coverage shall be provided in all new buildings in accordance with Section 510 of the IFC.
*Phoenix Fire Prevention Code
Section 510 of the PFC require that new an existing buildings be provided with Emergency Responder Radio Coverage Systems (ERRCS) designed to provide radio coverage in areas of buildings and structures where signal strength does not meet the minimum criteria due to building construction features and/or location.
